Weekly Blog 3-3 (56): Solar Bodies

Hello ‘Ilima

Another week in the books and for a short week, it was still packed full of things. First of all, this was the week of Yearbook Verification. From Thursday to Friday, the students would come to the front of A101 to check if they were in the yearbook and if all their information was correct. My job was to pull up the person’s information for the student to check if it was right, which was pretty simple. Throughout the time I was working, I had around 5 people who needed their information fixed which is good for how many students there are. But speaking about information, this week was my period’s turn for IDs and we had to make a new student ID multiple times. This would normally not be a big deal, but I only made a brand new ID once before. And to have to make multiple new IDs in one week was little scary just because of my lack of experience. But I kept my composure and the ID making went pretty smoothly. The only major thing that happened was that the camera’s battery needed to be removed and put back in but it took a while to put it all back together. But I’ve gotten a lot better at making new IDs and I should have a much easier time making one the next time I have to. Moving on, Science somehow got even worse this week. On Thursday, we were told about a project. We had to make a scaled down model of the Solar System. Now, this sounds pretty simple. Just make a model with distances that seem far and sizes that seem large, but are reasonable to be made. To give some credit to the project, the sizes were reasonable. They were like half a CM wide which is very easy. But, the distance was the problem. The conversion rate we used was 1 million km = 1 cm. This might seem like a fair rate, but once you start doing the math it turns ridiculous. The distance between the Sun and Mercury is 57 CM. That is pretty long and that is only the first planet. The distance between the Sun and Neptune (the farthest planet from the Sun) would be 4500 CM. That is 147 feet long. Everyone in my class was quick to notice how that is literally impossible for students in a classroom to do, but our substitute did literally nothing about it. If she was replaced with a cone, nothing would have changed. But I can’t entirely blame the sub because this was also just a bad project. To brighten up the mood, let’s talk about fishing. Nobody else came this week again, but I’ve been getting really good with my casting. I’m consistently able to set up the line and cast which is very good progress for me. The only issue I’ve been having has been clicking the bell on the rod before I cast. It’s just such a small detail that is easy to gloss over. But I’ve been doing really well and I just hope more people will start coming. The last academic thing to mention from this week would be Computer Science. Throughout this week, we have been learning different parts of coding with Python and it has been really fun. There is so many interesting things to do with Python and I have been learning really quickly. I even made a little quiz using inputs and if statements. The last thing for this week would be my league’s draft. This has been the second annual draft and I was pretty nervous. I had the 5th overall pick, but the prospects I wanted were likely to go ahead of my pick. I had thought about doing a trade up or a trade back, but nothing went through so I had to just wait. Something funny to mention is that one guy had 3 of the top 5 picks. He had the first overall pick and he had traded for the second and fourth overall picks. When the draft started, I patiently waited to see what he would pick, and for some reason he drafted a 4 star DB with the #1 pick. Then he drafted a random QB with the second pick. This really caught be off guard because there was a clear top QB prospect in Aaron Smoke, a Heisman Winning QB from LSU. The third pick was the top defensive prospect and then the fourth pick was some random TE. So when I was on the board, I basically had all of the top prospects available. I had already had a 4 star QB, but the idea of the 5 Star, Heisman Winning, and top prospect was so enticing that I ended up picking him with the 5th overall pick. Then the rest of the first round went by with some questionable picks and it was onto the second. I needed some help on defense and I saw two corners that looked really good. But I had no second round pick and I was scared that they were going to be picked ahead of me. So I began cooking up trade ideas so that I could trade up for the player I wanted, but nobody wanted to trade their pick. So I sat through the whole second round, panicking about the corners. My heart began to crack when one of them got taken in the middle of the second, but the other one was still on the board. Pick after pick went by and he was still on the board. Eventually, it got to my early pick in the third round and the corner was still available. I breathed a sigh of relief and I walked out of the draft with the top overall prospect at 5th overall and a 4 star cornerback in the third round. It was definitely a franchise changing draft and I should have a lot of success in this upcoming season.

Stupid Solar System Model Project

The Quiz I Coded

Absolutely Awesome Fit

The first highlight would be coding in Python. It was really fun to learn the different commands and it reminded me a lot of the time when I was in Enrichment and had to program robots. I’m very excited to learn more code and it should be fun to make some projects. The next highlight would be getting cooked in basketball. I know this sounds negative, but let me explain. After school on Friday, my friends and I decided to play basketball with a volleyball. It was on 1 on 1 with the last friend being the hoop. It was so goofy for a variety of reasons. 1. None of us had experience in basketball. 2. A volleyball isn’t the best ball to be used as a basketball. 3. The person who was the hoop was in constant danger of getting hit by the ball. So when the game started, we just had a fun time being stupid. The highlight from the game would be by friend hitting a between the legs dribble which made me fall down. We all started laughing but we were also very impressed because he did a crazy move. The last highlight which relates to this would be the forehead off that my friends and I had. During recess of Friday, my friend group decided on having a competition of who had the biggest forehead. I (thankfully) lost the competition and so I was just able to laugh at my friend’s huge foreheads. The best part was that we started to play tic tac toe on some of the foreheads by drawing on the picture of their head. The first lowlight of the week would be Science. As I am writing this, I still can’t get over how stupid the project was. Anyone with a functioning brain can understand that you can’t measure out 147 feet in a classroom with the materials we were provided. That’s 147 rulers, laid out in one line. For one person’s project. Let’s do some quick math. I looked for the price of a plastic ruler online and the price was around $0.80. Multiply that by 147 and you get $117.60. For one group’s project. One group consisted of 3 people so an average class might have 7 or 8 groups, but let’s go with 7. $823.20 worth of rulers for one class to do the project. And this doesn’t include the amount of poster boards needed. This math would be too complicated because you would need exact measurements, but it would likely make the total over $1000 for a class to be able to finish this project. “But what if you use one ruler and mark along the way!” That is what I call a waste of time. If you were to do that, you would need to be moving and adjusting a ruler 147 times, all while marking and keeping track of where you are. It’s just insane to believe that the person who made this project thought that a group of students could do this, when the students themself even know it can’t be done. The next lowlight would be my headache. I don’t exactly remember what day it was, but I had major headache on one of the even days. It was so piercing and it made me feel miserable. Luckily for me, I had a bottle of DayQuil in my bag. So during lunch, I poured myself 30 MLs of DayQuil and chugged it all down. But what I forgot to think of was that I hadn’t eaten all day. So I just drank all of that DayQuil on an empty stomach. As my headache began to go away, an overwhelming feeling of nausea became to come over me. I felt like I needed to throw up, but at least my headache was gone which is a worse feeling, in my opinion. So then I spent the rest of day feeling like I needed to throw up, only to finally throw up once I got home. But moral of the story, getting sick isn’t fun.

The lesson from this week is that just because you are older, doesn’t mean you are smarter. This is a very intended shot at the substitute because I feel like that I would be a better substitute right now than she has been. But this also factors in with maturity. Sometimes there are very immature adults and very mature children which just makes it funny how adults always have the authority in situations. I know that mature children aren’t the most common sight, but they are definitely the better option in a situation than a stupid adult. Besides this, I mainly learned some physical things like coding and making a new ID.

Well, it is time for the second week of Magic Notes! This week, we have four different Magic Notes. Two winners and two honorable mentions. The two honorable mentions from this week are….. Ariya and Anela! Ariya’s Magic Note was chosen because I mainly found it funny. From telling me to dab on the haters and even a little Among Us character, I just found the note humorous. Anela’s Magic Note was chosen because it had a blend of humor and kindness that was funny. I laughed a little when I read, “CUE THE INTRO MUSIC!” and it felt nice to know that she believed I completed big tasks with ease. But now, the winners of this week were…. Riselle and Meygan! Starting with Riselle, her chaotic Magic Note to me was so funny and referenced many parts of this week. The picture of her note was the backside because she has stuff written on both sides, but the back had the awesome art. It was so funny for her to draw Miwa Kasumi, a JJK character that I joke about being my favorite character. It was just an overall awesome note and it easily deserved a win. Then with Meygan’s note, it made me audibly laugh. If you didn’t know, I have a running joke of telling the same bicycle joke. It’s a really funny bit and basically everyone in Leadership has heard the joke. So the part in Meygan’s Magic Note that made me laugh was when she incorporated the joke into her note. The joke caught me off guard and I actually laughed, which was probably the first time I laughed out loud to a Magic Note. So for that fact alone, it earned a spot here but it was also very nice. With that being said, this concludes this blog. I hope you have a great week. Cheers to another week!
