Weekly Blog 4-2 (65): Orientation Time

 Hello 'Ilima

After months of preparation, this was the week where the Orientation would finally happen. Orientation is a huge deal for Leadership as we spend all of our free time practicing and working on the Orientation. The first day of our Orientation was for Holomua, my former school, and I was pretty nervous. I had a very unique role for the Orientation as the Pre-Show host. For the beginning part of the show where the schools were still coming in, I had to keep the kids who were in the Cafe entertained. In preparation for the Pre-Show, I brought a deck of cards and a Rubik's Cube so that I can do tricks and bring audience members on stage. When the first bus came for Holomua, I walked onto stage and grabbed a mic so that I would be ready for when they walked in. The first group of kids entered the door and I gave a simple greeting. As they went to their seats, I began to get very nervous. I was scared that they wouldn't find the things I did interesting and just be bored of me. But I pushed the nerves aside and began with my tricks. I forget exactly what I started off with, but I'm pretty sure it was the Rubik's Cube. I asked everyone in the crowd if they could solve a Rubik's Cube in under a minute. It took a while to find and volunteers, but eventually someone raised their hand and I brought them onto stage. I handed them the cube and started a timer, but unfortunately they weren't able to finish it. After that, I did a card trick and I got one of the kids to help me with it. But sadly, the trick failed the first time I did it. That was kind of a blow to my heart, but I carried on and started a game of Simon Says. It was very funny to see some of the kids mess up and I think most people got eliminated at least once. When the next group of Holomua kids walked in, I greeted them and asked them if they could solve the cube. I didn't get any volunteers so I decided to try my magic trick again with a new crowd of people. I brought someone else onto stage and performed the trick and this time it actually worked. I got a good amount of applause and it was then time for the actual show to start. Walking off stage and heading back into the Boy's Dressing Room, I was very happy. The whole act went very well and I could tell that the students had fun. I got ready for the rest of show and after a brief cameo from me, I was back into the Dressing Room and got prepared for the Campus Tour. The Campus Tour was 10 different stops across the school that would allow the students to see everything our school provides. I started off the campus tour in the courtyard and it went really good. I wasn't very concerned with the campus tour as I knew the campus like the back of my hand and so I was able to breeze through the whole tour very easily. But the tour was made better by the fact that the students very funny. I was consistently laughing to myself at their jokes or jabs at one another which made the tour more fun. After that ended, it was time for the Fashion Show and I would be one of the first ones to go onto stage. I had a very flamboyant outfit and the audience was loving it. As I walked out, there was so much applause and it made me very happy. I was able to walk down the stage very smoothly and the Fashion Show was an overall success. After the Fashion Show was Important Dates and then questions. But after breezing through those parts, Holomua left and day one was over. It was very fun and it helped me get comfortable with Orientation. For the rest of the days, I started bringing this shape shifting cube that all my friends became obsessed with. The rest of the schools weren't as fun as Holomua, but the Orientation was still very good. If I had to rank the schools based off the students it would go: 1. Holomua. 2. Pohakea 3. Kaimiloa 4.Iroqouis. Also, the card trick actually worked every single time after the first attempt, which I see as a major success. Besides Orientation, there wasn't that many major things going on this week.

The first highlight of the week would be April Fool's from my Retro Bowl League. The joke that the staff did was that the league would be turning into an European league and we would need to all change our teams. Seeing this announcement, I immediately knew it was a joke but I played along and quickly made a logo for the French Flamingos. It was pretty funny and I had a good time making the logo. But speaking on my League, I've been doing pretty good. As of writing this, I am 3-1-1 and leading my division. The start of my season was pretty lackluster, but I've been picking up some traction, scoring 67 points against a divisional rival in one week. I'm very excited to see how the rest of the season pans out and I hope to make a good run in the playoffs. Then, I wanted to make a quick update on my healthier habits. I have so far lost 8 pounds in two weeks and I couldn't be more excited. With a mix of eating a lot healthier and consistent 7 miles walks, I think I can really start losing a lot of weight. I recently did my first 8 mile and it got difficult at some points, but it was overall very good. The first lowlight of the week would be school work. First of all, we have one pager in ELA about our culture. This would normally be fine, but the one pager was needed to be done on paper and I am horrible at drawing. Luckily, I'm good with Google so I have been finding images to trace over. I think it looks kind of good and all I have to do now is finish the background. But then the school work starts to get worse with Computer Science. We had this project in which we needed to create a poll that then prints out the results of poll. I was so stumped for the majority of the class and it took me asking for a lot of help to finish. But hopefully I will be able to finish other projects with less help in the future. But the worse thing from this week was a surprise vocab test for Science. We were not told about this test and we were never told to study for this test and it was just very painful because I honestly didn't remember the random vocab words we had to search up at the beginning of an earlier lesson. As a teacher, you should give your students time to study for a test they didn't know about or tell the students that there will be a test so that they can study on their own. It's very stupid and I hope that there won't be any more surprise tests like that again.

The lesson that I learned from this week is that warming up and practicing is very important. This mainly comes from Orientation is a couple of ways. First of all, I had put a lot of effort into practicing and getting ready for the Orientation which obviously made me more ready for it. However, I didn't put a lot of effort into practicing my card trick which can explain why I messed it up on the first attempt. The comparison of actions with preparation and actions without can also be seen in tests. In most  normal tests, I am able to study and be ready for what I am about to get tested on. But in the surprise science test, there was no way of knowing you needed to practice or prepare for anything, so when I was handed the test I struggled much more than I usually do when I am prepared for tests. So both examples tell me that practice is very important is key to success. With that being said, this concludes my blog. I hope you have a great week. Cheers to another day!
