Quarter Blog #1

 Hello ‘Ilima

The end of the quarter is just a couple days away and it has been a long 2 months. Many events, projects, and silliness has happened and it’s all being retold here. Every event (from memory) was picture taking, open house, flag football, and Family Nite. Out of those events, my favorite was Family Nite because it was fun working the booth and not tiring. Open House was mainly outside for us so it got annoying, flag football was constantly being outside for 2 weeks which was terrible, and picture taking was just kind of boring. But I still like all of the events we did. Then there are the classes. To rank my classes it would be; 1. Leadership 2. Social Studies 3. Science 4. ELA 5. Math 6. AVID. Most of the classes deserve to be a bit higher as they are actually interesting and cool. But AVID is an outlier. AVID is so boring and so far we only have learned basic organization skills like having a binder, how to meditate, and SUTW which we already learn in ELA. The boys on my table just goof around and the girls just talk and eat for most of the class. The best part of AVID is that is an easy class and also a break from all of the hard work. Math isn’t really much better as I hate math. I have been learning some new concepts but it doesn’t make me like the subject any more. ELA is simple and we have just been learning some writing strategies and writing a story. It’s okay and Ms. Miya is fun. Science gets boosted because of how fun the conversations are. Sometimes we just talk but I don’t like science so that’s why it is at 3. Social Studies is a really good because I like Mr. Cole because he speaks clearly, makes me interested in the topic, and explains things good. I also like Social Studies so that helps. Finally, Leadership is my favorite class and it’s not close. The hands on work is fun and the down to earth feeling is fun. When I say that, I mean that it feels more natural as there isn’t a teacher just standing up and teaching a lesson. It’s a lot more calming yet still productive which is a reason why I like Leadership so much. This difference really sets apart Leadership from the other classes. No matter how good a class is, it won’t feel natural. You don’t just go up to a person and give a TEDTalk for a conversation. There was many other small events that happened along the quarter which would take a while to list. I learned certain skills that could come up later in life, experienced school fights (I wasn’t in them), and made new connections. I’ve also joined Drama which has been interesting. Overall, this quarter has been a great opening to the school and how things are done here.

The highlights from this quarter has been Open House and Family Nite, flag football, and the experiences and connections. I grouped Open House and Family Nite because they both were late days and I got to do more work. Those events were very fun and productive and I can’t wait for more of those types of events. I enjoyed flag football because I liked watching the students play and make amazing plays. Team flag football is currently going on and there were multiple great catches. Finally, I group together the people I met and the experiences I had because it made me grow and it  made me happier. The lowlight I can think of is the first couple weeks of school. I say this because of the adjustments I had to make. I was dead tired going to school and I felt uncomfortable going to classes. Even with experience of the school during summer, I still was nervous. But I was able to get over my nerves and tolerate school. There would definitely more highlights than lowlights but I see that as a good thing.

I have learned many things across the quarter that I can’t put them into one big lesson. So I am going to separate them into categories. 1. Skills and Techniques: Skateboarding (ish), how to wind up cords, organization skills, and other small things were learned and would help me in some situations in the future. 2. Public Speaking: We were taught how to speak for crowds which would definitely help when we have to give speeches, but it also helped with confidence. It made me be able to talk to people without being scared which was a huge problem before. 3. Leadership Jobs: These lessons were specific to leadership which are how to use an ID machine, how to use a mixer, and how to set up a tv broadcast. These lessons are specific but are currently useful. 4. Morale Lessons: These morale lessons were mainly gained from seeing other people do something. These lessons are do what you are told, don’t get involved in things you aren’t part of, stay calm, and other things that I knew but were reinforced by actually going through it. All in all, I’ve learned many useful lessons which can definitely help me along the year and when I grow up.

Thinking of what we have already done, there are many things I am excited for. First of all, I’m excited for more ISA sports as it is really fun to watch the students play and just be outside. Then there are the Family Nites which I’m interested in as I wonder how they will be different. Finally, I’m interested in other late day events as they usually have more hands on work which I enjoy. Of course, I don’t know everything that will come out but I will go through whatever I have to do. This is either the last or second to last blog so I wish you all a good last week. Cheers to another day!
