Weekly Blog #28: Orientation of the Youth
Hello 'Ilima
WHAT IS UP 'ILIMA! Last week was a very long week, so let's jump into it. The monster-sized elephant in this room is 6th Grade Orientation. All of the hard work from this past year has finally paid off, and it was an experience. The first school to come was Holomua, which was my former school. I was super excited and the show started off good. When it was time for the school tour, I was ready and prepared. This tour went really good as I had all of my points down and the Holomua kids were really cooperative. It had just rained a couple of minutes ago, but that didn't affect us and we finished the tour smoothly. I had a joke that I would tell the groups (except the last one because I forgot). The joke was "the police might come by often, but it isn't for you, it's for me. Any questions?" The kids would be confused and laugh, and it was just a good time overall. The dance for Holomua turned out really good. I forgot some cues which made me really mad at myself, but I had fun and the dance turned out great. The second show was for Iroquois, and this was definitely more polished. The mistakes I made in the first show was fixed, the show flowed better, and I felt more comfortable. Something I should mention is that in all 3 shows, the kids loved my Lorax outfit. Wearing the outfit was always so fun because of all of the reactions I would get. Back to Iroquois, the show was overall an improvement to the first show. Problems were solved, jokes were made, and fun times were had. The final show was Pohakea and Kaimiloa. This was definitely the best show because the energy was the highest, the crowd was the loudest, and the vibes were on point. The speakers involved the crowd more in the show with scream contests that broke decibel charts. The tour worked out great with the students being very cooperative and having lots of fun. Overall, orientation turned out amazing. But this wasn't the only thing to happen this week. We had a practice for the dance competition where we got to build the props, and the ferris wheel was absolutely stunning. It was so humongous and everything about it gave off an aura. Seeing it spin was just an amazing site to see. In other news, this week was busy for other reasons than just orientation. Because, schoolwork. In ELA, we finished the English SBA and it was kind of good. I got a good score which I was happy with, but it was just a painful time. Tests are always terrible. But, something good did happen in ELA. One of my friends wanted to check their score, so I came along with them to check the score. Ms. Miya's advisory was having cake and she let us get a slice of cake to go. The cake was absolutely delicious and the strawberry that was on top was so fresh and juicy. Also this week was an AVID one pager was also this week which was about sleep and how the lack of it negatively effects teens. I made my one-pager themed after race cars. I did this because I made my title "Need for Sleep". I was inspired by the racing game, Need for Speed. I liked how my one pager turned out, and I was pretty satisfied with my work. Finally, there is a social studies group project where we need to make a presentation about an Oceania island. My group chose Papua New Guinea, and we got right away to researching. It was all going good as we got progressed really well, but my team members haven't really been making the slideshow. Their slides look unfinished while I had already completed all of mine. I hope that they will be able to finish their slides, or else I will have to do it for them.
A highlight from this week would have to be orientation. Orientation felt like a cumulation of all of the blood, sweat, and tears that the leadership team put into practicing and training for the final project. I had a great time giving the tours and showing off my dance in front of the schools, so it was definitely a huge highlight. Another highlight from this week would be getting the cake because it was extremely unexpected, but extremely needed. I hadn't eaten all day, and the cake was just so refreshing and gave me exactly what I needed to survive. A lowlight from this week would be the ELA SBA. The test it self wasn't super hard, but I just hate doing it. Having to read all of those words and constantly double think my understanding is just really annoying. The last lowlight was the school projects as it came at a time when I was really tired from all of the orientations, and just having to do the projects just destroyed me. These were the highlights and lowlights.
The lesson I learned from this week was to always stay ahead. This week hit me like a wrecking ball, with all of the different loads of work we had. It made me build up school work that I needed to finish, and that Wednesday night I spent doing all of that work wasn't fun. So, the lesson that I should know is to always be one step ahead of the game. I need to always be able to be in front of the pack so that I always can be able to do my work, even if times like this happens. This was the lesson I learned from this week.
This is the long awaited return of the magic note winners. As these are the first magic notes in a while, lets see who the winners are. In our honorable mentions we have.............. Mal, Zhalea, and Riselle! These magic notes were really good with two of them having cool drawings and one of them being really heartfelt.. The winners for this week are........... Mark, Reese, and Jewelyn! These magic notes hit my heart and I loved them so much. Our new leaderboard is looking like Jewelyn w/13, Reese w/10.5, Riselle w/5, Gabby w/4.5, Mal and Zhalea w/3.5, Naomi, Dominic and Jayden w/2, Mark w/1 Jayna, Cherish, and Valerie w/.5, and everyone else with 0.
