Bio Cube Blog
Hello ‘Ilima
Over the course of the summer, Leadership had an assignment called the Bio-Cube. The Bio-Cube is a cube of information, separated by 6 different sides. These 6 sides are Name, Background, Personality, Significance, Obstacle, and Quote. This project started during Bridge where we started by planning out our Bio-Cube. We were given a planning sheet and after we filled it out, we would practice saying the different sides in a group.
After the planning, we had to design the cube on Canva. I had absolutely zero idea on what I was gonna do for my design so I started by brainstorming. I was thinking of adding silhouettes of people who relate to the sides, but after trying it out, I didn’t like how it looked. I then tried a simple color theme but that was just boring. Eventually, I came up with the idea of the cube being a Macintosh computer with different computer wall papers for each side The idea, to me, was very unique and I liked how it looked. I finished the design by adding images of people or emojis that related to the information and it was over.
After the design, we received flat cardboard that needed to be folded into boxes. This would be the base of the cube. After folding, we have to ask Ms. Shayna to print the sides of our cube out so that we can do the last part. With the printed sides, we now had to tape them to the box. I did this part with my Nana at home cause that’s where I had all the pieces. I admittedly finished the cube later than other people, but the end product still turned out amazing.
With the Bio-Cube done, we moved onto Public Speaking. This started during the End of Summer Field Trip. We were broken up into groups of 3 with one of the members being an alumni. The other two would share their bio cube and then the alumni would give advice to the speakers. It was pretty easy, mainly because I was good friends with the alumni because they were one of my 8th graders. The next time we did public speaking was within out periods. We spoke at 3 different locations (A101, Cafeteria, Outside on Stage) and we shared one side of the cube. I did pretty good at all 3 places, mainly because I knew to stay loud so that the rest of my period could hear me. The last public speaking was during 8th grade advisory and that was also pretty easy. Among all the speaking, I liked to say a different opening each time just so that I would stand out more. Overall, this project was pretty fun and also helpful which I will touch on more later.
The highlights of this project starts off with the public speaking aspect of the project. It was enjoyable trying to get the right volume for each location and it was fun for me to find different introductions to do. Another highlight was finding the images for the cube. It was nice looking through my gallery and finding the pictures because it gave me flashbacks to when those pictures were taken. A lowlight of the project was taping the sides to the cube. It was pretty tedious to tape all the edges, but at least the end result was nice. Also, finding the theme for my cube was also a pain. But this project was much more positive than negative. If I could change anything about the project, it would probably be what the sides are. Two of the sides, Name and Personality, could either be removed or added onto a different side. In place of these could be more interesting topics like Future Goals, Interests, Inspirations, and other ways to describe a person.
I learned a couple of good lessons from the Bio Cube project. The first one is the importance of the planning and brainstorming part of a project. The planning sheets we made helped a ton during the designing and brainstorming was a huge part in coming up with a theme. I also learned that my speaking has definitely improved. Comparing my public speaking to last year, you would think that they last year me and current me were two different people. It was a nice reminder that I have grown a lot ever since the start of Leadership. Overall, this project has been very thought provoking and helpful for me.
