Weekly Blog 1-2 (37): Short and Sweet 2: Shorter and Sweeter
Hello 'Ilima
This week of school was 4 days long and consisted of mini projects and introductions. Beginning with IReady Diagnostics, I finished both of them this week. I got a 700 in ELA and a 595 in Math which is equivalent to 9th grade level for both. The ELA test was pretty simple and that Math test was very difficult as always. Going on a small rant here, but the Math test is so dumb. It always gives questions on topics I've never learned so there's no way for me to get the question correct. Next thing to cover is NHD. We started learning about the NHD project for this year on Thursday and I'm mixed on it. I like doing research and learning new topics, but the project always takes such a long time and there is so many different requirements. This year's topic is Rights and Responsibilities and it is purposefully broad so that we can be creative. Before I reveal my topic, you have to promise that you won't copy. Okay? Alright, so I'm going to be doing the story of Malcolm X, an activist for race equality during the 1900s. I choose this story because I feel like his story is not well known and I would like a lot of other kids around the nation to learn his story. Also during this week was a mini art project in ELA. We had to draw items in hexagon parts that represent ourself. The 6 parts were favorite music genre, favorite interest, biggest pet peeve, family life, culture, and your goals. It was a neat little project and we connected the hexagons together after we were done. The rest of this school week academically was just normal and easy. There was some fun things that happened outside of the academic zone like my first time trying Buldok ramen. I was gifted a cup by a friend and I decided to try it during lunch. The people in A101 thought I was gonna suffer from the spice and to prove them wrong, I put the whole spice packet into the bowl. Once the bowl was ready, they started recording me as I slurped the whole thing down. They thought I was gonna make a huge reaction, but it was honestly not bad at all. The was like some spice in my mouth but it was manageable. They never believed me, but now you know I do have a good spice tolerance. Finally, we started public speaking lessons during Leadership. We first shared our BioCubes with in our periods in 3 separate locations. Then we started sharing them in our Advisory in A101. From what I saw the others rate me, I would say that I did a pretty good job during the presenting. Overall, this week was pretty good.
The first highlight of the week was again, the time I got to spend with my friends. Once more exciting things happen, I will stop saying fun time with friends but for now, I have to praise the amount of enjoyment I get from being with my friends in person. Another highlight was the public speaking because it was a fun challenge to see if I could overcome the distractions of speaking in different locations like the cafeteria and outside on the stage. The last highlight was getting the results of the IReady tests. All the pressure of the tests was relieved the second I saw the scores. I was so happy realizing I was basically a 9th grader in the 8th grade. A lowlight related to this last highlight was taking the actual test. It was so stressful and difficult that I felt like giving up at multiple points. But I prevailed in the end which I am proud of. The last lowlight was NHD because being told about such a big project in the 2nd week of school really brings down the morale of a person. This week in total was more sweet than sour.
I learned multiple different things this week. The first thing I learned this week was how to use a spreadsheet. During Financial Literacy, Mr. Van Hooser taught us how to use a spreadsheet and it was very eye opening. Google Sheets has so many different functions and possibilities that I want to explore. Another lesson I learned was connections. During ELA, we had to work together to find connections between the different hexagons and we had to put those hexagons side by sides to ones that fit. It felt like a fun brain teaser and I also got to learn about the people in my ELA. Like how majority of them are Filipino. It's actually hilarious how many of them are Filipino. You could just rename 'Ilima Filipino Middle and there would be no difference. With that being said, this concludes my blog. I hope you have a great week. Cheers to another day!
