Weekly Blog 4-7 (70): All Academic Return
Hello 'Ilima
Hello 'Ilima
This week of school was only four days long, but was still packed full of stuff. The only school event that happened during this week was the All State Academic Team Banquet. The All State Academic Team consists of the top students from across Hawaii. To get into the team, you need a GPA of at least 3.8 and you needed to have done two sports. I find it very funny that I got in because the two sports I did were Cornhole and Bowling which are by far the sports that require the least amount of athleticism. But I still qualified for the banquet and I made sure to dress nicely. The Banquet took place on Wednesday night and was held at Ewa Makai Middle School. I’ve actually never been on the Ewa Makai’s campus so it was a nice surprise seeing how pretty the campus was. It was very clean and the buildings look new which was a change from how ‘Ilima looks. The Banquet was in Ewa Makai’s cafeteria, which was also very nice, and we had to check in at a table. For some reason, my name wasn’t on the list but all of the workers recognized me from my picture and they allowed my family and I to come in. I then had to search for my portrait which was randomly put at a table. I found my seat where I waited for the banquet to start. But to cut through the boredom of waiting, my family decided to go to the Photo Booth. In the corner of the cafeteria, a Photo Booth was set up and had props that could be used. After some quick pictures, I went back to my seat and waited. I found it interesting that all of the tables were mixed up with no visible pattern. You would think that they would put the same schools together, but it was all random. But I wasn’t alone at my table as Riselle sat across from me. After around 30 minutes of waiting, the banquet began. We would first be served food and after we ate, a ceremony would be held congratulating the students. They even had a raffle going on which always makes me invested. A small detail that I forgot to mention was that they had a video of the ISA sports playing which Leadership actually made. I never mentioned it in the past blogs cause I didn’t feel like it was that notable to talk about, but our video was playing throughout the banquet. The meal that Ewa Makai had prepared for us was lasagna with meatballs, bread, and some salad. It was pretty awkward eating with a table full of people I didn’t know, but that food was really good. My favorite part was the bread as it was so fluffy and flavorful. After the lasagna was done dessert and I liked it a lot. But the more important thing was that I kept on losing the raffles. Time after time, numbers that weren’t mine got called and it was very annoying. But it was time for the ceremony which consisted of one school calling up their students to receive a certificate and stand on stage. ‘Ilima was around the fourth or fifth school to go up and the whole thing went by slowly. But I did get $10 from underneath my chair. Apparently the different teachers planted money under some chairs and I was one of the lucky few to get an award. But after all the students were done going in stage, the banquet ended. It was a decent time and it was cool seeing all of the different people who were apart of the team. Besides the banquet, there were a couple things that happened in school. First of all, Ms. Mili finally returned to school. My first couple of classes with her were actually pretty good and she seems pretty cool. Ms. Mili is a chill teacher and hasn’t overwhelmed us with information. She does speak kind of quickly, but I’m able to understand everything she says. Then, I finished my ELA story draft. So last week, we worked on planning our essay and throughout this week we worked on the first draft of that essay. My story is about a school teacher who gets replaced by a robot and he has to figure out how he will support his family. From friends who have read the story, they said it was a very realistic and intense piece of writing which were two areas that I wanted the story to be focused on. I’m very happy with the rough draft and I’m excited for the final draft.
The first highlight from this week would be teacher’s appreciation week. For teacher’s appreciation week, my mom and I bought cups and gift cards for my six teachers that I would pass out to them. I loved seeing my teacher’s reactions to receiving the gifts and I’m happy that I was a good part of their day. Another good thing about teacher’s appreciation week was free food. The school was handing out free pizza for the staff and Mr. Ing got four boxes of pizza. Then, he allowed Leadership to take two slices. It was so awesome because I hadn’t eaten that whole day and the pizza was from Dominos which is my favorite pizza place. The next highlight from this week would be room cleaning. My room has always been very cluttered and dirty, but during this week I set out to change that. Trash bag in hand, I went through my room and emptied out all of the things I didn’t need. Then, I reorganized my room for it to look much nicer. Some of the best parts of my room now are that cabinets. I used to have an old black shelf in my room, but it was so broken down that I decided to get rid of it. After removing the shelf, I decided to use the new space to add some cabinets. In the drawers of the cabinets would be random things for storage and then the tops of cabinets could be used to hold other things. I was also able to empty out other drawers around my room which gives me a lot of space to store things. Ultimately, I’m really glad that I cleaned up my room. The only lowlight from this week would be my air fryer. So one night, I was cooking meat in the air fryer and I had left to do things in my room. But then my mom spotted smoke coming from the air fryer and I rushed over to check on it. Somehow the stovetop got turned on which caused the bottom of the air fryer to melt off. We quickly turned off the heat but the damage was done. The air fryer would be a major hazard to keep on using so it had to be removed. I was honestly heartbroken as I had gotten really comfortable with the air fryer, but we recently bought a new air fryer so I should be able to go back to enjoying air fried meals.
The lesson that I learned from this week is that you should wait before making an opinion on something. So before Ms. Mili returned, I heard about how a lot of people didn’t really like her. Because of this, I came into her class a negative attitude and I was surprised to see that she wasn’t bad. So what this tells me is that I should wait to gather my own thoughts about something and not just listen to what other people think about something.
This week had one easy choice for the winner. All of the Magic Notes were fine, but there was just one note that stood out from the rest. The one winner from this week was... Emma! A first time winner, Emma's Magic Note was really amazing. It was a perfect blend of nice and funny that I love from a Magic Note and it was the obvious choice to be the winner for this week. But Emma winning this week hardly effects the third place race that is going on. With that being said, this concludes my blog. I hope you have a great week! Cheers to another day!
